![]() ![]() ![]() With the full release, players can explore eight procedurally generated departments (worlds) where they’ll meet a diverse cast of characters and utilize over 70 weapons and spells to get Death Inc. After a successful year-long run in Steam Early Access, it’s time for millions of mortals from around the world to don their cloak and grab their scythe as they take on the role of Death Incorporated’s CEO, Death, and experience the complete version of this hack’n’scythe adventure. Redwood City, CA – Ma– Today, Gearbox Publishing and Magic Design Studios announced Have a Nice Death, the darkly charming 2D action roguelike, has officially launched digitally on Nintendo Switch and PC (Steam and Steam Deck) for $24.99. You can check out a new trailer above and read below for more details: The full release of Have A Nice Death features eight procedurally generated worlds, over 70 weapons, and a diverse cast of characters to interact with. If you don’t get it, say it out loud. The charming 2D roguelike Have A Nice Death is now available on PC and the Nintendo Switch after a year-long run in Steam Early Access for an MSRP of $24.99. The minibosses are all named something somewhat satirical, like the janitor being named P. Death is sick of working in an office, working behind a desk, and has the attitude anyone who’s worked that job will fully appreciate. One of the best things about Have A Nice Death is the humour. Characters are cartoonish and sound like they’re from Animal Crossing, which helps you ignore some of the darker themes surrounding death like accidents and deaths. While, as mentioned above, the graphics are cute but also really well detailed. The soundtrack matches the style and aesthetic of the game, which is always a really key thing to nail. Have A Nice Death has a great soundtrack, and you’re always greeted with a nice little jingle as you start from Death’s office. It’s unfortunate, because it can really ruin the flow and momentum that you’ve been building through previous battles. The best bet is to just not move and let everything load in, because you will absolutely take damage if there’s an enemy or a trap immediately at the start. One key thing to point out is that travelling between floors can be a bit rough. I have lost at least a couple runs just simply because I decided to use one of these weapons that feels like it would class as a dodge, but doesn’t. Although you’ll move through enemies, and you have to lunge to use them, if the enemy attacks you’ll still take damage. That said, there are some weapons through the game that have attacks that are essentially lunges or feel like dodges. When battling enemies, you’ll be able to dodge through attacks as per the usual. You’ll be able to find more or new ones on any floor, with it obviously being easier on the armoury floor. These are things like throwing stars, a hammer, or magic. You’ll also be able to pick up sub weapons. Of course there’s a basic scythe, but there’s also a double scythe that’s quicker and a bit weaker, a scythe on a string that has longer range. Once you start a run you’ll have to pick a scythe, right in the beginning you’ll have to pick between two options. You can go through the armoury to get better weapons, you can fight a miniboss, or you can go through others1 to raise your max mana. As you reach the end of a floor, you’ll be able to decide between a few different options for the next one. Each floor does have different options though. It is generally move through a corridor, beat some enemies along the way, come to a room that will lock you in, beat some enemies in the room, repeat. It’s all fairly linear outside of one area here or there that have bigger platforming sections. As far as the extra levels, they’re pretty simplistic. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s the weirdest thing humans do, I think, to put on a performance,” they said. The feeling of being up on stage, however, is still something they haven’t gotten used to. But Duffy is more than happy to leave that all up to interpretation.ĭuffy is well-toured as a musician, having played venues big and small across the country in group and solo gigs. There is a certain playfulness with the meta-songwriting of “Gift of the Human Curse” and “Andy in Stereo,” both of which talk about perhaps fictional people creating music. ![]() After just one listen, it quickly became one of my favorites.ĭuffy sings, “Weeping at the symbols, your knees cold upon the tile / As a golden disc of sunlight seemed to circle you entirely / And so you ask the question, why is she in Germany?” “The tether isn’t as strong, so I had to tap into these different parts of my intuition.”įollowing one of the songwriting class’s prompts to write about a moving piece of art, Duffy wrote “The Bust of Nefertiti,” about the sculpture’s simultaneous, conflicting symbolism of both beauty and colonialism. “One of my emotional goals was, ‘Well, what happen if I didn’t dredge up everything that was painful over the last year and a half and write songs about it, and what if I wrote songs about some other things?’ And I actually found that harder,” Duffy said. The lyrics are less personal than on their previous albums, but for Duffy, that doesn’t mean they’re any less intentional. “It’s been kind of refreshing, in a way, because there’s such playfulness as the fulcrum … of the record.” “With this whole record, I went into it feeling a lot more light and just wanting to have fun and experiment,” they said. Taking inspiration from the likes of Frank Ocean and Björk, Duffy ended up with a more textural, processed sound. Duffy tells me it came about after teaching a month-long songwriting class that moved them to push outside their comfort zone. Though it’s just six tracks and 20 minutes long, Sugar the Bruise feels like a fully fleshed record. Last Friday, June 16, on the release day of Hand Habits’ newest record, Sugar the Bruise, I had the pleasure of speaking with Duffy ahead of their Friday, June 23 show at SOhO. While they still play guitar for other artists’ projects - including recently touring with Perfume Genius - Duffy has poured just as much passion into their solo project, Hand Habits.
